If you own or operate a business, you manage competing demands for your time and resources. Juggling priorities means you may not be abreast of all of your legal responsibilities as an employer, including workplace health and safety requirements.

Workers Health & Safety Centre (WHSC) can help. The WHSC is designated by the government as Ontario's health and safety training centre. Our trusted and proven information and training resources will keep you current and help you comply with all your legal duties. We can work with you to set up an effective workplace health and safety prevention program.

Your duties by law

As an employer, you have many legal responsibilities for your employees, including an overall general duty to take every reasonable precaution to protect workers' health and safety. The best way to meet this duty is to identify, assess and control or better yet eliminate workplace hazards and provide essential training.

Your duty to train

Employers have both general and specific legal duties to train worker and workplace representatives. To begin, Ontario law now requires awareness training for workers and supervisors. To be effective and ensure learning this training needs to be more than online information.

Other necessary training requirements include:

  • Certification Part I and II for at least one worker and one employer JHSC  representative
  • WHMIS, plus new GHS rules for chemical classification and labelling
  • Violence and harassment training for all workplace parties
  • Training for Mobile Equipment Operator Competency
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • Needlestick and sharps training
  • Confined Space Entry training
  • Working at Heights training.
